Bachelor of Arts in Music


This major is intended for students who want a broad, general introduction to the field of music. Combining this degree with a minor in business, mass communications or other areas gives the student many exciting and varied career options as well as meeting the requirements for entrance to many masters degree programs.

Bachelor of Music

Music Education track

Students are given the skills necessary to be highly successful as music teachers in the Texas Independent School District systems. They receive training on all groups of musical instruments and in depth understanding of teaching techniques. They take all the courses necessary to receive the state teacher certification in music education.

Performance track

This is the pre-professional degree that prepares students for a career as performers. They achieve a high level of mastery on their instrument/voice that will allow them to be successful taking auditions for graduate schools or to win position in performing ensembles. This is a very rigorous, demanding and highly rewarding career path.

Composition track

This degree will help students hone their talents and skills as composers. They are given extensive training in music theory, compositional techniques, and orchestration. Students are given challenging assignments to write original music for a wide variety of instrumental/vocal ensembles. This degree is especially helpful in preparing students for further graduate level study.

 

Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

Music Therapy is one of the fastest growing and most sought after special disciplines in music. Students who complete this degree also receive the American Music Therapy Association certification. Career options range from infant care to hospice. There is a great demand for trained/skilled music therapists nationally.
