Music Therapy

The School of Music at SHSU offers the bachelors degree in music therapy or, for the student who already holds a bachelor degree in music, a music therapy equivalency program. Either offering prepares the student to sit for the music therapy board certification exam and to practice as a professional music therapist. Programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
The music therapy degree plan includes intensive course work in music as well as courses in the behavioral sciences. For several semesters, students are concurrently involved in clinical work with a wide variety of populations, gaining practical experience while taking courses that coincide with those experiences. The final credits are earned in a full-time, 900-1040 hour internship under a board certified music therapist in an approved program.
