Fall 2009 Ensemble Audition Music
General Info
All Music Majors are required to audition for the appropriate ensemble each semester.
Non-Music Majors are invited to audition for the ensembles listed below.
Remember, all students wishing to be a Music Major must complete, and pass, an Entrance Audition.
Choir Auditions
Auditions for the SHSU Choral Ensembles will be held near the beginning of classes in the fall semester. Each new and returning choir member should register for an audition time. Choir placement is for the entire school year. If a student comes to Sam Houston or wishes to join choir in the spring, please contact Allen Hightower for an audition time.
Dr. Hightower asks that you bring a prepared song, aria, or favorite hymn to the audition. (Therefore we have posted no vocal music in the links above.) An accompanist will be provided. Additionally, you will be asked to sight-read as well as sing various vocal exercises that demonstrate beauty of tone, intonation, and flexibility.
For Fall, 2009:
Choral auditions will begin on Wednesday, August 19 for placement in choirs. A sign up sheet for auditions will be placed on the choral board outside room 202 by Monday, August 16, 2009.

Jazz Ensemble/Band Auditions
Each new and returning jazz student should sign-up for an audition time located on the Jazz Studies Board. Auditions will be held in room 205 of the Music Building. Mr. Schneller asks that you bring a prepared transcription, jazz-etude, or any prepared piece to the audition (therefore we will have no posted audition music). Additionally, you will be asked to sight-read. Students wishing to be considered for jazz-chair placement will be asked to play 1-2 choruses of an improvised solo with a Jamey Aebersold play-a-long. The preliminary drumset audition will be conducted by Mr. Lane and Mr. Schneller in RM 224 (the sign-up sheet will be posted on RM 224). This portion consists of sight-reading and a demonstration of various styles. Final placement in ensembles will be determined by reading/rehearsing charts with the Jazz Ensemble and/or Jazz Lab Band, conducted by Mr. Schneller during the first week of classes.
