Teaching Beginning Band Instruments (Schedule)

Excellent beginner teachers will discuss how to start every student on all beginning band instruments. Managing a classroom so that every student gets attention and excellent information will be studied. Instrument pedagogy, motivation, retention and skills development will be covered. This week is designed to answer young teachers questions in an inspiring and positive way.

Teaching the Middle School Band (Schedule)

Outstanding Texas band directors will share how to teach and manage every aspect of the middle school band’s 7th and 8th grade years. Ensemble, motivation, advocacy, discipline, communication, competition and retention are just a few of the topics. This week is designed to answer questions and share techniques to creatively develop an outstanding Middle School Band Program.

Teaching the High School Band

Come and be refreshed and inspired about teaching high school. Outstanding faculty will offer instruction designed for Experienced Teachers and High School Assistant Band Director. Topics will include Ensemble Skills, Management, Advocacy, Leadership, Percussion and Jazz. Teachers include Brian Merrill, SMU and Duncanville HS: Frank Troyka, Berkner HS; John Lane, SHSU; Aric Scheller, SHSU; Rick Rodriguez, Spring HS; Jerriald Dillard, Oakridge HS; Chris Young, Cypress Woods HS and Matthew McInturf, SHSU.

No Experience Required: A Great Start for New Teachers

Designed for new College Graduates about to begin their first job. Lead by Matthew McInturf, new teachers will acquire confidence in managing a class, working with students both excited and reluctant and learning to be an effective teacher and have a successful first year.

Teaching Jazz & Improvization

Come ready to enjoy a highly positive experience with the fundamentals of jazz and improvisation based on the aural tradition of blues and swing. You will perform it and learn how to teach it. Faculty Aric Schneller and Scott Plugge and others will guide you through the basic techniques for directing small groups to big band jazz ensembles.

Earn SBEC Approved Professional Education Credit

The workshop includes Professional Education Credit approved by the State Board for Educator Certification.

This credit counts towards teacher certificate renewal. All attendees will receive a certificate detailing number of clock hours (28-36 hours), content, etc.
