Profile of Dr. David Cole

Dr. David C. Cole is the Director of Orchestral Studies at Sam Houston State University where he conducts the University Symphony and the University Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Cole has previously led the orchestra programs at Northern Kentucky University, the University of Utah, Southern Utah University and Northern Michigan University and has taught in the Waco, Texas public schools. He holds a BM in Music Education from West Virginia University, an MA in Orchestral Conducting from The University of Iowa, an MM in Violin Performance from Baylor University and a DMA in Orchestral Conducting from The University of Arizona.
Dr. Cole's recent guest conducting appearances include concerts with the Pleven Philharmonic in Pleven, Bulgaria, the Marquette Symphony in Marquette, Michigan, the Orquestra de Camera de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Mexico, the Baylor Symphony Orchestra in Waco, Texas and the Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra. He will be the guest conductor and orchestra clinician for TMEA Region XXIII in November 2008 and Region XIX in January 2009. Dr. Cole has taught as artist in residence for a course in orchestral conducting at the Benemerita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla in Puebla, Mexico and for a conducting master class, seminar and conducting lessons at Baylor University. In 2001, Dr. Cole was selected as one of four conductors to record the national anthems heard during the Medals Ceremonies at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In the fall of 2007, Dr. Cole was named the Kentucky Music Educators Association District 6 College/University Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Cole has performed as a violinist in the Waco Symphony, the San Angelo Symphony, the Tucson Pops, the Seven Hills Sinfonietta, Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra, the Cincinnati Civic Orchestra, the Keweenaw Symphony in Michigan, and the Sault Symphony in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Cole serves as a clinician for Festivals at Sea and is in demand as a conductor and clinician throughout the United States. He is currently involved in creating performing editions of the orchestral works of the British composer Havergal Brian (1876-1972) in collaboration with the Havergal Brian Society of Great Britain.
