Profile of Alicia Valoti

Alicia Marie Valoti, originally from New York, has held a internationally fruitful music career as a young violist.

As an orchestral musician, Mrs. Valoti has acted as section and principal violist of many European orchestras, including the Sinfonica della Valle D'Aosta, the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina, and the Orchestra Classica d'Alessandria. She performed in concerts, recordings and tours which brought her to most of the major cities in Italy and such places as Germany, Luxembourg, Montecarlo and Switzerland. In 2004 she traveled with the Orchestra "Vincenzo Galilei" of Fiesole to Cairo, Egypt, where the orchestra performed in the Goumhouria Theater as part of an Italian cultural tour. As principal violist of the Sinfonica della Valle D'Aosta, Mrs. Valoti was part of the Italian premiere' of works of the renowned composer Michael Nyman in Aosta and Florence in 2008.

While the orchestra has played an integral part of her musical life, Mrs. Valoti also has a great interest in chamber music and contemporary works. She participated in chamber music competitions such as "Toscana Classica" and coached chamber music in the Aravon School in Dublin, Ireland. Mrs. Valoti has also given chamber and solo music recitals in Canada, Italy and the US. An advocate of new viola music, Mrs. Valoti gave the concert premiere' of Gaetano Giani-Luporini's "Sorella Viola" ("Viola Sister") in the Conservatory of Florence in 2006 and worked with the composer to receive insight of his musical intentions. Recently Alicia Valoti participated in the 2009 tour in Colorado of Astraios, where the group made the first official recording of Sally Beamish's (b. 1956) "Between Earth and Sea".

Mrs. Valoti has had an intensive preparation in viola, and participated in several masterclasses and courses. These include the International Meisterkurse Bratsche (Germany), Domaine Forget (Canada), Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Italy), CW Post Chamber Music Festival (New York). Awards consist of the Ralph Buckham Award from CW Post, the Bernard L. Issenman Award from McGill University, the Mullen Music Scholarship from Rice University, and a grant to "Laboratorio Internazionale" in Gemona, Italy. She will also use the Lovett Travel Fellowship from Rice University to study at the Accademia Chigiana with world famous violist Bruno Giuranna in August 2009.

Mrs. Valoti holds a Bachelor in Viola Performance from McGill University, a Master in Viola Performance from the Conservatory of Florence, and an Orchestral and Chamber Music Performance Diploma from the Scuola di Alto Perfezionamento Musicale di Saluzzo. Principal teachers include James Dunham, Diemut Poppen, Augusto Vismara, Hatto Beyerle, Antonello Farulli and Douglas McNabney. She is currently pursuing post-graduate studies at Rice University.
