Organizations

Student organizations are vital to the successful operation of the School of Music and to the attainment of excellence as an artistic enterprise. The following student organizations have national affiliations, perform many services for the school, and represent student interests.

Membership in one or more of the above organizations is highly recommended. These organizations are important contributors to the vitality of the school. In addition, they can function as an important personal support system, a source of lasting personal and professional friendships, and a significant avenue for growth.

American Choral Directors Association (ACDA)
Advisor: Dr. Allen Hightower
American String Teachers Association/Symphony Association (ASTA/SA)
The group's membership consists of string students at Sam Houston State University and was organized to support string pedagogy on the SHSU campus.
Advisor: Dr. Carol Smith
Kappa Kappa Psi (ΚΚΨ)
National band fraternity. Provides valuable service to the school and serves to promote excellence in band music.
Music Educators National Conference (MENC)
National organization for music education. Membership in this student chapter is open to music education majors.

Mu Tau Omega (ΜΤΩ)
National organization for music therapy. Membership open to interested students committed to the study and/or advancement of music therapy in community, educational, and clinical settings.

Phi Mu Alpha (ΦΜΑ)
National music fraternity for men. Provides valuable service to the school and community.
Advisors: Randy Adams & Bruce Hall
Pi Kappa Lambda (ΠΚΛ)
National music honor society. Invitation to membership is limited to the top students from the junior, senior, and graduate classes by vote of the faculty members of ΠΚΛ.
Sigma Alpha Iota (ΣΑΙ)
International music fraternity for women. Provides valuable service to the school and community.

Tau Beta Sigma (ΤΒΣ)
National band sorority. Supports band studies and provides valuable support service to instrumental ensembles and to the school.
